Summer Reading

I noticed that some people have been checking the blog so I thought I would do a post about what I am reading over the summer. So far, I have read two books, both by the same author - Philippa Gregory. She is the author of The Other Boleyn Girl, which was made into a movie a couple of years ago. As you know, I love history and I also tend to favor books with strong female characters. So, these fit the bill quite nicely : )

This novel is a work of historical fiction about King Henry VIII's first wife, Katherine of Aragon. It follows her life as a child in Spain, through her first marriage to Henry's older brother Arthur and finally her marriage to Henry.  Through all the hardships and troubles she experienced, her determination to be the Queen of England remained constant.

This novel is also a work of historical fiction. The main character in this novel is the fictional Hannah Green, a young jewish girl who has fled the inquisition in Spain. She is gifted with the "Sight," and inadvertently finds herself serving as Queen Mary's (a.k.a. Mary Tudor, Bloody Mary) court fool. She is frequently sent to serve as a spy on Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I).

I greatly enjoyed both books so much so that I am currently reading another of Philippa Gregory's books, The Red Queen. This novel follows Margaret Beaufort the mother of King Henry VII.

Hope you are enjoying a great summer and doing a little reading yourself!
